Interview met: Donkey Rollers
De Donkey Rollers staan al sinds jaar en dag aan de top van de Hardstyle scene. De act, die bestaat uit Raoul (Zany), Peter (DV8) en Johan (Johan van Korven) was er bij toen Hardstyle geboren werd en heeft bijgedragen aan de huidige sound. We mochten deze heren een aantal vragen stellen.
Donkey Rollers bestaat al meer dan 10 jaar, kunnen jullie nog met elkaar door één deur?
Peter: Plezier is altijd de kracht van Donkey Rollers geweest. In de studio, op het podium, tijdens interviews en natuurlijk ook onderling. Dat word je niet zo snel beu he?
Hebben jullie alle drie evenveel input, of hoe gaat tijdens het produceren?
Raoul: Ja we hebben alle drie evenveel input. Natuurlijk heeft iedereen z’n individuele kwaliteiten tijdens het productieproces. Maar cruciale beslissingen tijdens het maken van een track worden samen gemaakt.
Johan, hoe komt het dat jij je wat meer op de achtergrond begeeft?
Johan: Ik ben de langste dus dan kan ik over de schoudertjes van Raoul en Peter gewoon meekijken.
Hoe komt het dat jullie pas hebben gekozen voor DV8 ná het eerste half jaar Donkey Rollers ?
Johan: Tijdens het eerste half jaar van Donkey Rollers was Peter nog niet begonnen als MC. Anders was ‘ie er vanaf het begin bij geweest. Ook pas na zijn komst hebben we onze grootste optredens en tours gedaan. En die ‘maakt’ hij altijd. Dus wie heeft het nu nog over die zes maandjes op een periode van bijna elf jaar?
Hebben jullie wel eens onderling ruzie gehad?
Peter: Ja over wie het laatste bier uit de mini-bar heeft gesnaaid.
Raoul: Na een nachtje doorhalen is het humeur van een bepaald persoon niet altijd optimaal. Niet dat dat tot ruzie leidt, meer tot vermaak van de anderen die er de humor wel van inzien als er één met een dikke groef in z’n gezicht rondloopt!
Jullie zitten met z’n drieën opgesloten in een kamer. Een persoon zegt dat twee van jullie weg mogen als er één achterblijft. Hoe lossen jullie dit op?
Raoul: Welke persoon zegt dat dan? En hoelaat? En wat hebben wij ‘s ochtends als ontbijt gekregen? En hoe is het met de Dow Jones Index gesteld op dat moment?
Hoe hebben jullie het ‘ontstaan’ van hardstyle ervaren?
Raoul: Wij zijn mede met een ander klein groepje pioniers verantwoordelijk geweest voor het ontstaan van de hardstyle. Het is gewoon een passie van ons die we uitdrukken in onze muziek en gelukkig is dit goed opgepikt door het publiek. Hierdoor is de scene echt gigantisch geworden. En daar zijn we ook ontzettend trots op, dat we hier onze bijdrage aan hebben geleverd.
Wat zijn de grootste veranderingen in de Hardstyle-scene geweest door de jaren heen?
Johan: Helaas is het allemaal wat zakelijker geworden. Het begon met mensen die een passie deelden en er veel plezier in hadden, ongeacht of ze nu een hoge of lage fee betaald kregen. Maar toen het commercieler werd (in de zin van groei naar het main-stream publiek), trok het bepaalde managersbedrijven aan die Hardstyle als een “bedrijfsvorm” zien en niet als een passie.
Dit soort mensen maakt het niet uit of ze hun geld verdienen met een Nederlands-talige tape-act of in onze hardstyle-scene. Zo werden Raoul en ik onlangs een keer van het podium afgestuurd door één of andere manager, omdat we niet tijdens de set van de DJ voor ons mochten opbouwen. Lekker handig als je dan met je handen vol kabels klaarstaat om het aan te sluiten.
Bij een remix probeert de betreffende artiest zijn visie uit te spreken over de originele track. Wat vinden jullie er van dat het origineel vaak ‘beter’ wordt gevonden?
Raoul: Wat is beter he.. Als je je eigen sausje over andermans track kunt gooien, dan vinden je fans dit meestal top. Maar een originele track zit meestal al bij de mensen “ingebakken”, dus het kan heel lastig zijn om daar verandering in te brengen. Je ziet het zelfs gebeuren met eigen producties.
Als ik een track test op een event word dit dikwijls met een mobieltje opgenomen en op Youtube gezet. Vervolgens vind ik dat ik nog wat moet veranderen om de track beter te maken. Als deze verbeterde versie dan uiteindelijk online komt, zijn er altijd opmerkingen van “what happened to the old kick, it was way better.” Nou, als dat zo zou zijn, dan zou ik dat wel zo laten ;).
<sarcasm mode on> Het publiek baseert af en toe haar mening op een overstuurd, platgecompressed, schokkerig Youtube filmpje wat ze afluisteren op een of andere cheap-ass koptelefoon of pc-speakertjes.. daar kan ik natuurlijk nooit tegenop met mijn studio-apparatuur ;) </sarcasm mode off>
Waarom hebben jullie ervoor gekozen om Hardstyle te produceren/draaien en niet mee te gaan met de hardcore stroming toendertijd?
Welke hardcore stroming? :-P
Naast de track ‘To The End’ samen met The Pitcher hebben jullie nooit een collab gedaan. Is dit bewust of komt het er gewoon nooit van?
Johan: Er komt op zeer korte termijn een collab uit met B-Front. Ook met Noisecontrollers hebben we wat mashups gemaakt. Waarom er minder collabs zijn.. Tja, op het podium zijn Donkey Rollers echt een act op zich, dus we staan ook vrijwel nooit back2back geprogrammeerd zoals de meeste dj’s tegenwoordig.
Noisecontrollers gaf in een eerder interview aan dat hij ‘vroeger’ op zoek was naar de ‘Donkey Rollers kick’ omdat hij die zo vet vond. Hoe is die ontstaan?
Raoul: Gewoon aan elke knop draaien die ik tegenkwam totdat ik tevreden was. Zoiets gebeurt gewoon, dat is niet doelbewust gepland. Wel leuk om dan jaren later nog van collega’s dit soort opmerkingen te horen. Dat laat wel zien dat we echt een inspiratie zijn geweest voor de hedendaagse scene.
Waar kijken jullie tegenop op muzikaal gebied?
Johan: Dat is voor ons allemaal heel verschillend. Peter heeft een rock-achtergrond en een hele grote algemene muziekkennis, hem kun je dus ook zomaar op Pinkpop of Lowlands zien rondlopen. Raoul heeft meer een hiphop-achtergrond, dus hij had graag met Dr. Dre de studio in willen gaan. Maar die besloot koptelefoons te gaan verkopen.. Ook geen gek idee trouwens..
En ik vind vrijwel alle stromingen behalve smartlappen leuk. Ik hoor gewoon creativiteit in alle soorten muziek, maar mijn muzikale topper blijft toch wel Queen.
Als laatste. Hebben jullie een primeur/tipje van de sluier over iets dat jullie binnenkort gaan doen?
Johan: Naast de collab met B-Front die in juni of juli gereleased zal worden, ligt er nog wat anders op de plank klaar.. Dus houd gewoon onze optredens in de gaten.

The Donkey Rollers have been standing at the top of the Hardstyle scene since we can remember. The act, consisting of Raoul (Zany), Peter (DV8) and Johan (Johan van Korven) was there when Hardstyle was born and they’ve contributed to the current sound. We had the chance to ask these guys a few questions.
The Donkey Rollers as an act exists for more than 10 years now, can you still live with each other?
Peter: Fun has always been the thriving force behind Donkey Rollers. In the studio, on-stage, during interviews and of course with each other. You don’t really get tired of that.
Do all three of you deliver the same amount of input when you’re in the studio together?
Raoul: Yes, we all deliver the same amount of input. Of course everyone has their own individual qualities during the process of producing, but crucial decisions during the creation of a track will always be done together.
Johan, why is it that you prefer to stay on the background?
Johan: Well I’m the tallest so it’s easier for me to peek over the shoulders of Raoul and Peter.
Why is it that you chose DV8 as your MC when Donkey Rollers already existed for 6 months?
Johan: During the first 6 months of Donkey Rollers Peter didn’t even started as an MC yet. If so, he would have been there from the start. Also, the biggest gigs and tours that we’ve done, didn’t start until after he had joined us. And he always nails them. So who’s talking about those measly 6 months during a period of almost 11 years?
Do you ever get into a mutual argument?
Peter: Yes about who snatched the last beer out of the mini-bar.
Raoul: When we pulled an all-nighter, the temper of a certain person isn’t always exactly sunny. Not that such a thing leads to an argument, but it mostly leads to the amusement of the others that think it’s rather funny when one of us walks around with a crusty face!
The three of you are locked up in a room. A person says that only two of you can leave it one of you stays behind. How do you solve this? Raoul: What person says this? And what time is it? And what did we have for breakfast that morning? And what’s the status on the Dow Jones Index at that moment?
How did you experience the ‘existence’ of Hardstyle?
Raoul: Together with a small group we’re the responsible pioneers for the existence of Hardstyle. It’s just a passion of ours that we express in our music. Luckily for us, people picked it up and eventually made the scene huge. And we’re very proud of the fact that we’ve contributed to this.
What have been the biggest changes in the Hardstyle scene through the years?
Johan: Unfortunately it has all become more about business. It started with people that shared a passion and had fun doing it, no matter what the fee was. But when it got more and more commercial (main-stream), it pulled certain managing companies who saw Hardstyle as a business, instead of a passion.
These people don’t care if they make their money with a Dutch tape-act or our Hardstyle scene. For example, Raoul and I were recently kicked off the stage by some manager because we weren’t allowed to prepare for our upcoming set. Perfect timing when you’ve got your hands full with cables, ready to plug everything in..
When an artist makes a remix, he tries to put his vision in the original track. What do you think about the fact that the original version is better for most people?
Raoul: Well what’s better.. If you poor your own sauce over someone else’s track, your fans will probably love it. But most people dig the original because they’re familiar with it. So it can be very tricky to change that. You can even see it happen with original productions.
When I test a track at an event, most of the times it gets recorded with a cellphone and uploaded to YouTube. Afterwards when I think the track still needs some changes in order to make it better, people will always comment on it online saying “What happened to the old kick, it was way better”. Well if that was the case, I wouldn’t have changed it now would I ;).
<sarcasm mode on> The audience sometimes bases their opinion on a distorted, compressed and bad quality YouTube video that they listen on some cheap-ass headphone or speakers. My studio-equipment can’t possibly win it from that ;). </sarcasm mode off>
Why did you choose to produce/play Hardstyle instead of following the Hardcore movement back then?
Which hardcore movement? :-P
Besides the track ‘To The End’ with The Pitcher you have never made a collab. Is this on purpose of do you simply never find the time for it?
Johan: Well we are releasing a collab with B-Front very soon. We’ve also done a few mashups with Noisecontrollers. But why there aren’t many collabs.. We’re an act when we perform on stage, so we are almost never scheduled to perform back2back like the most DJ’s nowadays.
Noisecontrollers said in a previous interview that he used to look for the ‘Donkey Rollers kick’ because he thought it was awesome. How did it came to exist?
Raoul: Just by turning every knob I came across until I was satisfied. Such things just happen, it wasn’t planned on purpose. But it’s nice to still hear things like this from colleagues years later. It shows that we really were an inspiration for the current scene.
Who are your idols?
Johan: That’s different for all of us. Peter has a rock-background and a very broad general knowledge of music, so you can find him at festival like Pinkpop or Lowlands too. Raoul has more with HipHop, so he would have loved to work with Dr. Dre in the studio. But he decided to sell headphones. Which is not a bad idea actually.. And I like almost every genre excepts tear-jerkers. I just hear creativity in all sorts of music, but my all-time favourite remains Queen.
To end this interview, could you tell us something about some Donkey Rollers projects in the near future?
Johan: Besides the B-Front collab which will be released in June or July, there are some other things waiting to be revealed. Just be sure to visit our performances and you’ll find out eventually.
