Dutch festival industry relieved: VAT increase off the table

The Dutch parlement has decided not to implement the controversial VAT increase on tickets for festivals and events. After fierce criticism and intensive lobbying from the cultural sector and opposition parties, it was decided to find an alternative measure that is less harmful to the sector.

The announced VAT increase led to many concerns in the events industry. Organizations warned that higher ticket prices would limit the accessibility of festivals, which could lead to declining visitor numbers and financial problems. Newspaper AD now reports that the plan has been turned down for the time being, so festivals and events can breathe a sigh of relief for now.

The VAT increase would damage festivals & events

Minister Eelco Heinen (Finance, VVD) tried to reach a deal with opposition parties until the last moment, but that turned out to be a difficult battle. The opposition demanded complete exceptions for sports, books, newspapers and the cultural sector. Without their support, the government would not have obtained a majority in the Senate, much to the delight of the festival world.

In order to avoid embarrassment, the government decided to agree to an alternative. Although the immediate threat of the VAT increase has been averted, it remains uncertain what the new tax measures will look like. The sector will continue to monitor developments closely.
