“After COVID, we lost our sense of purpose,” says Pepijn. “We had done it all.” Niels adds: “I can still enjoy festivals as a visitor, but making music and performing started to give me stomachaches. We didn’t want that. We didn’t want Frequencerz to turn into small bar gigs and then slowly fade away. We want to stop at our peak.”
The decision to stop wasn’t only because they no longer felt the creative spark for Frequencerz, but also due to other priorities. Niels had previously invested in a software and AI company that began to grow significantly and demanded more of his time. “At one point, I said to Pepijn in the studio: we need to talk,” he recalls. Pepijn laughs: “That’s almost like your girlfriend breaking up with you. I know Niels well, so I saw it coming. But when he actually said it, I stared straight ahead. Everything flashed through my mind. ‘Oh, so now we’re really stopping.’”

The Last Run
With The Last Run, the duo embarked on a farewell tour over the past year, kicking off with their own show at AFAS Live. “It really flew by,” says Pepijn. “We played sets that felt like a journey, mainly with the tracks that we still feel connected to. We didn’t really touch anything from after 2022. I’d rather leave our mark with our hits.”
Niels also looks back on a special year. “At Defqon.1, we played in the MAGENTA, and the crowd’s screaming really went through me. It hits you, you’re proud, but it’s also emotional.” Pepijn remembers that day vividly: “Those shows brought out the true fans. Earlier in the day it wasn’t very busy, but when we started, it was packed. This year felt truly unique. It was the icing on the cake.”

One last time Frequencerz at Decibel outdoor
Saturday marks the final chapter of their career at Decibel outdoor. “I promised my friends I wouldn’t cry,” Niels says with a laugh. “But it’s up to the crowd to make that happen.” Pepijn also expects it to be an emotional moment: “I’m not really an emotional person, but of course it means a lot. At the Defqon Legends show, it got to me too. I think Decibel will be the same. It’s not sadness that it’s ending, but the appreciation you get from people… that’s what gets you.” Niels adds that he’ll especially miss the atmosphere: “The fun, the people who come just for you, and sing along at the top of their lungs.”
Their final message is clear: “Saturday, 8 PM, mainstage Decibel outdoor. We’re going to make it a madhouse one more time,” says Pepijn. “And a huge thank you to everyone for all the support over the years. It’s been one hell of a ride,” Niels concludes.
