A new name in the scene, but certainly not a new face. Under the alias Nevergate, Thomas Busschers creates music that defies categorization. Instead of choosing a genre, he chooses feeling. The result is a distinctive and layered sound that moves between UK hardcore, frenchcore, and hardstyle, without ever truly fitting into a box.

Some might remember Thomas as Crossfiyah, the alias under which he produced music between 2013 and 2018. But eventually, he chose to close that chapter. “The pressure that came with it no longer matched what I was getting out of it,” he explains. “The creative process started to feel like a struggle.”

After the release of ‘Rage’ in 2013, ironically the track that opened many doors, doubt started to creep in. “I was searching: what do I actually want to say with my music? The tracks went in all directions.” What followed was distance, reflection, and a renewed focus. The result: Nevergate, a project rooted in authenticity, emotion, and purity. “No compromise, no noise. Just pure focus on what I feel and want to create.”

No boxes

Nevergate’s music is hard to define and that’s exactly the point. “It’s energetic and melodic, but also dark and intense,” he says. That depth isn’t accidental. One example is ‘Charlotte’s Journey’, a track about the passing of his grandmother, symbolizing her journey ‘upward.’ “That kind of emotional weight naturally flows into the production process.”

Nevergate’s undefinable sound didn’t come from a master plan, it evolved organically. “In 2023, I started again with no real idea where it would lead,” he recalls. The starting point? A cheesy cover of the ’90s hit ‘Tears Don’t Lie’ by Mark ’Oh. “It was a turbulent time, I had just become a father. Funny coincidence: the original melody is from ‘When a Child Is Born’ by Johnny Mathis… It had to be, I guess. Haha.” The studio brought clarity again. “Once I started making more music, a direction naturally appeared.” The 2024 release ‘Heathens’ marked the true beginning of what Nevergate was meant to be: “Darker, more layered, and truly my own.”

What’s next?

Nevergate isn’t slowing down anytime soon. “I’m full steam ahead,” says Thomas. With consistent releases and plans to become more active on stage, the ambition is clear. “In the end, I don’t just want to feel that energy in the studio, I want to share it with a crowd.”

Through his own label, Nevergate Recordings, Thomas continues to build on his vision: music without borders, but full of meaning. Because whatever he makes should immediately sound like Nevergate, even if you can’t quite define it. “I’m not trying to be a copy of what already exists.”

Nevergate’s latest release ‘Center of Gravity’ is out now and available for streaming.
