For hardstyle fans, July 4 is a special day. Today marks exactly 24 years since Q-dance officially registered the name ‘hardstyle’ as a trademark. Although the sound itself had already emerged before then, many fans consider this date to be the official birthday of the genre.

The birth of a new sound

In the early 2000s, the hard dance scene was rapidly evolving. After hardcore had reached its peak, there was room for a fresh new sound. During the first editions of Qlimax and Qlubtempo, DJs and producers experimented with a blend of German, Italian and UK hard house. That sound quickly evolved into a genre of its own, defined by its distinctive kicks, energetic melodies and a tempo that would later become the foundation of hardstyle.

The very first edition of Qlimax took place on February 3, 2001, in a sports hall in Amsterdam. A few weeks later, the first edition of Qlubtempo was held at the Hemkade in Zaandam, an event that played a key role in shaping the new genre. By the end of 2001, Qlimax had already grown into a major event, with its third edition selling out the Heineken Music Hall.

Following several successful editions of Qlimax and Qlubtempo, Q-dance officially registered the name ‘hardstyle’ as a trademark on July 4, 2002. It gave the emerging music style not only a recognizable identity, but also a name that would eventually become known around the world.

From a Dutch niche to a global phenomenon

Twenty-four years later, hardstyle has grown into a global phenomenon. Festivals such as Intents Festival, Defqon.1, Decibel Outdoor, Knockout Outdoor, and countless other events attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Artists tour across the globe, while subgenres such as euphoric, raw and xtra raw continue to push the sound in new directions.

Yet the foundations of hardstyle still lie in those early years, when a new style slowly evolved into one of the most influential genres in the electronic music scene. Twenty-four years after the official registration of its name, hardstyle has become a worldwide genre with a passionate and close-knit community.

Happy Hardstyle Day! 🧡
