LEES OOK: Rosbeek: “It’s amazing to see how much the scene has grown”

“If I want to organize a hardstyle event, I have to write a safety plan as if 10,000 hooligans are coming,” Outsiders says. This highlights the frustration he feels toward the media and local authorities, who often paint an unfairly negative picture of the scene. “The Netherlands and the media still don’t want to understand that we’re here, that we’re big, and that we’re not all drug-using idiots.”

“Our events are often the only ones where thousands of people come together safely without any trouble. That’s something almost no other scene gets, but we do. But if there had been an incident, it would’ve been all over the news,” says Outsiders. He points out that the media are quick to report on incidents at hardstyle events but rarely highlight the positive aspects of the scene. “We don’t need that attention either – that’s what makes the harder styles so beautiful.”

There is, however, one exception to the rule, says Outsiders: Omroep Brabant. “They come out and record fun stuff and show the positive sides of the scene.” This shows that there is indeed space for a more positive approach to hardstyle.
