“We would have ran through brick walls to become Rebelion”

Rebelion’s roots lie in a period of total obsession. They describe those early years as intense and uncompromising, saying: “Everything was new to us, everything was exciting, and we would have ran through brick walls to become Rebelion. Like, there was nothing that was going to stop us. We were fucking obsessed.”

That mindset extended far beyond simply working hard. Manifestation unexpectedly played a role in their breakthrough. As they explain: “We had Hard Bass as our home screen, because no matter how long it takes, we should visualize that that’s where we’re playing. Even when we were in the studio making music, we were visualizing Hard Bass. From the day we put that as our home screen, it took us 16 months to play at Hard Bass, and that was from nothing.”

Their lives revolved entirely around hardstyle. “Our whole life was about hardstyle. If we didn’t have a booking, we’d be going to a party. It was so cool to be on the same stages as the people we really looked up to, and eventually start to work with them. Our first collabs were with Deetox, Warface, Delete… we were like, what the fuck is going on.”

Two completely different albums in one year

This year, Rebelion released two albums that stand in stark contrast to one another. Overdose: The Final Dose is aggressive, dark, and chaotic, while Beyond The Horizon leans heavily into melodic and conceptual territory. “It’s like we’re bipolar. The albums are two completely different things. Once you’ve emptied your tank making all the raw and crazy shit, you can focus on something that’s completely different, that we also still love to make.”

The reception has also been different this time around. “The Overdose album got a lot of responses from fans,” they explain. “But this album we’ve had a lot of responses from colleagues, which is always cool because that means people that know what they’re talking about musically have said that they like it.”

But the melodic side comes with fewer viral moments. “Melodic is not hyped,” they admit. “A crazy raw song gives you that instant reaction. But with melodic, it takes a while for someone to understand the premise of the song. People need time to catch on and go: oh, okay, I get this.”
